Óscar Furlong was an Argentinian basketball player who was active from 1944 to 1957. His strong performance at the 1948 Summer Olympic games basketball competition helped the Argentine team stay within one basket of the US, ending in a 59-57 loss. After the game, the United States head coach, Omar Browning, called him, “one of the finest ball players I ever saw”. Furlong received and declined offers to play in the United States, for the NBA’s Minneapolis Lakers, the Baltimore Bullets, and for Adolph Rupp, of the University of Kentucky. Furlong was a member of the Argentine team that won the gold medal at the 1950 FIBA World Championship, scoring 20 pints in the final against the United States, and was awarded the MVP of the tournament. At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, his team earned a fourth-place finish after losing in the semifinals against the United States. Furlong attended Southern Methodist University in in 1953, where he played college basketball with the SMU Mustangs, and reached the 1956 NCAA Final Four with future NBA player Jim Krebs. Furlong was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007.
