I was very excited to make the connection and find a "new" 70-year-old Bob Cousy card. I wrote an article about this discovery and any information I could find out about it on the Sports Collectors Daily Blog website. I encourage all who are interested to read it. I've summarized my findings below. The photograph the card was replicated from in the images is for informational purposes only, the listing is for just the card itself.
The card is replicated from a well known Cousy photograph from a game between the Boston Celtics & Milwaukee Hawks on November 11th, 1954 at Madison Square Garden in NY.
The team names have been omitted from the card, likely because of potential licensing issues, but the jersey numbers are identical.
Bob Cousy or the teams aren't mentioned on the back of the card. It's titles simply No. 17 - Partido de Baloncesto (Basketball Game)
When you overlay the photo and card images on top of one another, it's remarkable how exact the images align. The players are all in the same exact positions and all uniform numbers match. (Please see photos in listing for examples).
The card was released by Chocolates Amattler in their "Album No. 1", which is thought to be released around 1957 (according to Spanish collectors), coinciding with the release of Cousy's Topps Rookie card. I have yet to confirm this date, but images and text in the album point anywhere between a late 1956 to 1958 release.
The card is smaller, similar to tobacco size at 2.375" x 1.625"
This is the first time that this rare Bob Cousy card has been put up for sale at auction. It's a rare opportunity to buy a very unique and early original card. A must have for the serious Cousy collector. Please see the pictures on this listing for condition, as they are actual scans of the card. This card was made to be glued into an album, so it would be very difficult to find in pristine condition (or at all!)
I am providing all the information I know so far about this card - It's the first time it's ever been brought to market, so I'm trying to be as descriptive and forthcoming as possible. There is a precedent set for graded cards to be labeled with a player's name even if it's not on the card (1929 Churchman's Babe Ruth, 1950 Menko George Mikan, 1959 Chocolates Torras Ted Williams, etc), so let's hope this card gets on PSA/SGC's radar soon!
